Position: Systems Specialist, William Allen White School of Journalism & Mass Communications

  • Administer five Windows, Linux, and Mac servers, approximately 60 Mac and Windows workstations for faculty and staff, and three 20-station Mac labs. This includes:
    • Backup of all relevant data on servers and faculty / staff workstations.
    • Hardening and patching of operating systems on all machines.
    • Monitoring of system performance and security for servers.
    • Creation and management of user accounts, groups, and access to resources in Linux and Windows Active Directory environments.
  • Supervised a staff of five computer lab support personnel, including hiring, scheduling, training and development.
  • Developed and implemented checkout procedures for School of Journalism digital camera equipment.
  • Created secure server space for faculty members and Journalism classes, as well as the means for faculty to access the data offsite via VPN.
  • Established print control on School of Journalism printers to curb waste.
  • Tested IP360 Vulnerability Scanning software on behalf of Information Technology Security Office and set up a self-scan schedule for the School of Journalism network.

Project #1 – Backup /Disaster Recovery Plan:

  • Designed and implemented centralized data backup system for School of Journalism.
    • Researched and recommended purchase of Windows file/database server from Dell and Retrospect Backup Software from EMC, Inc.
    • Configured Windows Server and Backup software for fast, secure performance.
    • Developed strategy for backup, offsite storage, and recovery of data on servers and faculty computers.
    • Deployed Retrospect backup software to over 60 School of Journalism workstations, laptops, and servers.
    • Migrated School of Journalism financial data from Mac OS9 server to new Windows Server.
    • Migrated shared School of Journalism class folders from Xserve to new Windows Server.

Project #2 – Active Directory Domain Decommission and Migration:

  • Decommissioned KUJH Newsroom domain and accompanying DNS and DHCP servers.
  • Migrated application server and 12 control room workstations to the home.ku.edu domain.
  • Configured Newsroom application software to use assigned Active Directory group and KU Online IDs for single sign-on.

Project #3 – Database Design:

  • Migrated 4000+ record database from Filemaker 7 to MySQL 5.1.
  • Worked with Journalism Faculty and Information Technology staff to redesign the database for optimum data capture and system performance.

Kansas City KS Community College
(July 2004 – March 2007)

Position: Director of Web Services

  • Directed full lifecycle development of interactive websites and web applications, from initial requirements gathering to design, coding, testing, documentation and implementation.
  • Supervised a staff of two developers and three student interns, including hiring, motivation, and employee development.
  • Initiated and cultivated partnerships with IT staffing firms.

Project #1 – Website Redesign:

  • Redesigned website to reflect recent College reorganization.
    • Performed stakeholder analysis to determine appropriate project requirements. This involved surveys of students and employees to ask them what they visited most often on the site, as well as specific tasks and processes that required web functionality or greatly benefited from it.
    • Crafted project plan, including required resources, schedule, and budget to meet these requirements appropriately.
    • Simplified navigation/organization/visual design of site so that its extensive high-quality content was easy to find for users in all target audiences, testing each design iteration with actual site users.
    • Directed preparation of content for inclusion into the content management system. This included removal of obsolete HTML tags, as well as any formatting directives that were no longer necessary.
    • Migrated site to new server to improve site security and application performance.

Project #2 – Content Management System:

  • Directed the customization of open-source content management system.
  • Directed the integration of separate custom applications including employment application, events calendar, and personnel directory.
  • Installed and configured CMS software, as well as the Linux operating system software and Litespeed web server software and MySQL database for maximum performance and security.
  • Reduced lag time between creation of content and its publication online.

Project #3 – E-Portfolio Application Program:

  • Customized XSLT templates in the open-source Java-based e-portfolio software. Utilized SQL queries to access information about who was using the system, in what manner, and how often.
  • Developed training program for inclusion into freshman study skills course.
  • Improved vocational education by giving students a means to package their college accomplishments into one complete presentation for employers.

  • Provided technical help desk assistance to seven clients and over 500 client vendors for Java-based Transportation Management System.
